Synopsis
Welcome to The Future.
At this time, Future Tense is a novel under construction since 2002. A novel about a technologically advanced future, one that looks superior on the surface, but is quite dystopic beneath the covers.
The novel is set in the not too distant future, where the latest advances in technology provide wealth and luxury for many. The themes of Nanotechnology, Virtual Reality, Ubiquitous Computing and Artificial Intelligence set the stage for a world that is very attractive. The cities are filled with towering buildings, and vast arcologies of steel and glass. Pretty people go about their business, spending, consuming and taking part in the latest trends.
Technology puts information at the fingertips of all good citizens, yet at the same time, vast data stores hold the history of your every move. This technology benefits society by almost totally shutting down violence and crime in the cities. At the same time, global mega-corporations posess immunity from the laws that govern average citizens, and transcend the reduced power of national governments.
With all great advances in technology come increased opportunities for abuse, loss of privacy and the growth of a disenfranchised under-class which chooses to un-plug from Utopia and set out on their own. Can society benefit from an exponential advance in technology - or are the risks too great and the consequences irreversable? Will Man's technology serve him, or supplant him? Are we all headed down a road where our technology is bound to outstrip our humanity? Will our technology compensate for our shortcomings or amplify them? Or, will humanity transform into something else - a hybrid of our greatest accomplishments and our greatest ambitions - and our greatest fears?
